G is for Gurkha: A Children’s Book

Origins and Early History

The Gurkhas trace their name to Gorkha, a town in Nepal, linked to Guru Gorakhnath, a revered religious warrior-saint. Their military prowess was first noted during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816), where their bravery against the British East India Company led to a peace treaty and subsequent recruitment into the British forces in 1815.

Military Service and Global Presence

Post-recruitment, Gurkhas served in numerous conflicts, from the Indian Rebellion of 1857 to both World Wars, and modern engagements like the Falklands War and Afghanistan. They were stationed in diverse locations such as Hong Kong, Malaya, and Brunei, and notably, the Singapore Gurkha Contingent has been part of the police force since 1949, focusing on riot control and counter-terrorism.

Reputation and Legacy

Known for their loyalty and bravery, Gurkhas have a storied history, earning 26 Victoria Crosses, the highest British military honor. Their ethos, “Better to die than to be a disgrace,” and their battle cry, “Ayo Gorkhali!” (“The Gorkhas are coming!”), underscore their fierce reputation.
